The point of this whole scene was make fun of a nerd who tries hard to be confident and act cool. We knew peter parker as a beta stemmaxxer loser who got cucked by mj multiple times, has a shitty job, was bullied in HS etc etc. And this is how he "redeems" himself. He was made a laughing stock on purpose, to show that nerds will always remain nerds.
