Joseph shorter than Virgin Mary?

I was reviewing this 10th century artwork depicting the imminent circumcision of Jesus and it looks like Joseph was a shortcel, why is a twelve year old girl taller than him?



Do you think it's possible Basil II Porphyrogenitus was a short man and the anonymous artist was trying to appeal to him?

Basil is described as having a broad chest, but not being tall, so I would assume he is short because if a king was tall people would probably be complimenting him on it all the time.
