Western interventions fail because Western nations think they are dealing with people like themselves. Bad theory of mind. People in backwards countries are barbarians who don't know what is good for them.

It's not that these places can't be fixed. Colonists who were under no such delusions were able to get a lot done.

This is not even counting the impact of Middle Eastern despots who irreversibly changed the very fabric of their countries through divisive sectarian politics. Shia/Sunni/Kurd Iraqis were not bombing each other and destroying their land prior to Saddam Hussein.
