Same with Islam. The truth is, with such a big book as the Talmud or Hadith, one can certainly find past incidents to justify a particular action in reaction of a situation regardless of context.
Some legalistic mindset is required to process the "cut off limbs and gouge eyes" style verses that seem overblown. "Oh no he was just punishing camel thieves...oh no God told him to do so!!" unless you're a true psychopath.

Nah those benign ‘camel thieves’ mercilessly killed an old shepherd to get what they wanted. Imagine if that behaviour became acceptable amongst the populace, this is why brutal punishments like impaling and public tortures were done to make sure the audience never makes that mistake

At this point, is it better than superstitious belief? "I have to do X in a certain way so G-d won't strike me". It's like some people believing in Feng shui and do bad shit in my country.
