Shortly after Davison’s rampage in 2021, I delved deep into the forums frequented by incels for a piece I was researching for a woman’s magazine, to try and understand what perverted the minds of these young men, many of whom seemingly had everything going for them.

What I found was nauseating; rape jokes and rabid racism was rampant, packaged up in memes and emojis to make it seem ironic and palatable. Women were described as ‘holes’ or ‘foids’, reducing our worth to our orifices, and deeming us to be subhuman.

I spoke to reformed incel John (not his real name), who took to Reddit to denounce the community and vowed to free his mind from the poison it was infected with.

He sought solace on the internet, and found himself drawn to incel ideology after browsing through an infamous internet forum – a breeding ground for controversial and inflammatory views. From there, he found another forum, and another, burying himself deeper in a rabbit hole.

Some of the details John told me have remained with me to this day. The most chilling revelation was when he described ‘bonesmashing’, a practice whereby incels are encouraged to use hammers to break the bones in their face in the hope that, when they heal, they will be better looking and therefore more appealing to women.

I truly believe that we need to take the pipeline that makes young boys into female-hating incels as seriously as we take religious fundamentalism.
