I don't think having hope makes me normal. I think you can both have hope yet rot at the same time. I've used the Lutheran doctrine of Sinner and Saint before to compare: I am a sinner and totally screwed (have no hope b/c autisic and ugly) and at the same time also saved by grace and perfectly justified (have hope, can't explain why). I don't deserve a GF/wife in the same way I don't deserve Grace, but I got the latter though.
