Not to defend them, but looking from a historical and modern perspective, it's clear why.
Both colonizers genocide, but they do it differently; one is them is exceedingly efficient at it, and I'm not talking about the one who did it with guns.
When the British colonized a land, they kill some locals and leave them to their device with some amount of autonomy. Second citizens in their own land, but they kept their culture and so on.
The Spanish on the other hand, they send in the men to mix with the locals, snd send in settlers. Over time, the local culture is wiped out and this is why the whole America south of USA is a giant larp of "Hispanic Catholicism" fest, whatever the hell does that mean...of course, it may be the only thing unifying them after all the racemixings.
Compare Brazil and India. India kept their caste system and religions.
Compare Philipiness to Malaysia. Similar island countries, but one is full of people trying to larp as Spanish.
Also, why the hell are feminist marches always in Latin speaking countries (including France)?
