Everything is about potential, i.e. what your genetic limits and strengths are as a person. While environment plays a certain role in this (a chad from an abusive family can turn out to be malnourished and a manlet), most of it is about potential.
If you were to put everyone in the same kind of family, with the same support system and all, the social hierarchy that resulted from it would be extremely similar to the one today.
Even "hard work" and perserverance requires potential. Hard work without talent is much less useful than talent without hard work. Gymmaxxed framelets will get thrown around by less gymmaxxed bonemoggers all the time, mathematical prodigies will naturally incline towards smart solutions with little effort, and slayers will get more returns out of PUA self improvement strategies than inkies.
