It is interesting (to me at least!) how Linux distros are very keen on Firefox

Are you concerned about Chromium?

Apparently all of the top 10 Linux distros on DistroWatch have Firefox as their default browser.

They do often have Chromium-based browsers including Chrome in the software repositories, but Firefox... at least on Mint was the only one installed by default.

There seems to be unease about Chromium. Apparently it's not as "free" as Firefox is... I guess Google exert a fair bit of influence/control over it.

Oh, for anyone who doesn't know, Chromium is the open source backend that Chrome is based on as well as Brave and Edge and quite a few other browsers.

I couldn't care less if they spy on me or whatever.
Chrome UI is just too good even if it consumes a shit ton of resources but it doesn't matter if you have a beefy computer.

Ever since chrome nuked Manifest v2 that basically killed adblockers people either switched to Brave's built in one or switched to Firefox where you can still use Ublock Origin.

be careful with that cult

Ah wow. Does this affect other Chromium-based browsers or just Chrome?

You think it's a cult because the Linux community are so keen on software being open source?

Bear in mind that even the top 10 are quite varied and mostly by different teams.

Pretty much all Chromium-based (besides Brave which is built in and not an extension) ones since it's part of Google's war on adblockers especially on YouTube.

Oh wow. That's pretty bad. Google also seem to favour their own technologies in Chromium, as I understand. Like it supports webp not jpeg xl.

Chromium is like open source but obviously google is the lead developer, the main reason according to them is increased security when using extensions to prevent them from tracking you, but at that point you might as well not install bad extensions at all.

I feel like security is always the excuse given.

It's like how the government says "we need to spy on you cause of national security" and "protecting the children" pulls on emotional strings, in other news did you know the UK government asked iCloud to backdoor their encryption?

... wild how that quote is now so applicable to software too! That's not something he could have anticipated! lol :)

And that doesn't surprise me about our government. The "uniparty" (Tories and Labour) are both very authoritarian and left-wing! It's a pretty wild time to live in Britain!

So much for George Orwell's 1984 in Airstrip One lol, but to be honest I heavily doubt that the UK government would let Apple leave (considering how unpopular the government already is), this doesn't affect me cause I store everything locally and I don't use apple products.

You never know with Labour... lol

And yeah I don't use Apple or cloud either... other than web-based e-mail which I guess is a form of cloud storage. I don't especially dislike Apple though. It's hard to after how MS have been behaving!

I'm not sure if 1984 painted a more right-wing or left-wing authoritarian state? It is starting to feel a bit 1984 around here regardless!
