After doing some research, I found that in early islamic world, a female slave can be taken as a concubine, and the owner is allowed to have sex with them under the interpretation of verses such as Qur'an 23:5–6 and Qur'an 70:29–30.
While their status is a concubine, they're still legally enslaved. Unless she is pregnant and gave birth to the master's child and get the status of umm walad (mother of a child).
As long they're not umm walad, they can generally:
be bought and sold
be given as a gift
be inherited by her owner's heirs after his death.
