Yes. I agree with the former. I think it’s a subconscious desire to be able to date when we weren’t able to in teenage years, like you said.

Honestly, I think I have Peter Pan syndrome. Never really enjoyed life due to severe mental health problems, anxiety, shyness, had nothing in common with anyone around me, loner, etc.
I feel like even if I could find a gf and eventually marry her, I’d still be reluctant as I feel I don’t want to take on the responsibilities of adulthood, nothing but More stress, unhappiness, anxiety, worry, regret, etc.
