Just something I was thinking about recently — it might just be me, but almost nothing on television seems to appeal to me anymore. Meanwhile, my sisters/mother watch television constantly and the shows they’re watching are just mindnumbingly stupid imo at least. I think we can also say with a high degree of certainty that what men and women find appealing in games/movies is often quite a bit different.
Reading online I saw some articles about the rise of stuff like reality television which women are on average a much larger group base for then men (though certain specific reality shows are targeting men and do exist as well — of course part of the appeal to studios has to do with relatively low cost).
Thinking on shows like the Office, back in Uni and even now it seems like I’ve met a ton of women who rewatch this show religiously over and over again. The shows alright don’t get me wrong, but it seems to me it’s a lot more popular with women vs men on average. Same with shows like modern family or parks and rec for that matter.
On top of all that we’ve been seeing this big push to put female leads and woke politics into most television shows. Take “Queen’s Gambit” for example (many people apparently think this show is based a true story) — in truth, we have a separate chess league for women because even the best women simply don’t (or perhaps can’t) compete against the best men well — the best female chess player in the world (4 time recurring champ) was ranked only 80th or so including men. Still good of course, but it’s illustrative that without a separate league we’d just see women bodied all the time left and right like in basketball or anything else for that matter. So, good show or not, “queens gambit is definitely “woke” and trying to appeal to women and girl power/all that crap.
Meanwhile we’ve also seen a clamping down on sexy women/characters in games/tv/movies due to seeming political pressure, but I imagine a lot of it is also trying to cater to women rather than men and women seem to fucking hate sexy attractive women in movies and games for some reason. Honestly I just think women hate women other than them who are more attractive, but maybe I’m wrong eh.
I could be missing something, it just kinda seems like other than Japan the western countries are all focusing their media/tv/even games on female audiences these days.
Perhaps it could be due to more women watching television over all? Since there are more households where women stay home with the kids and watch Netflix all day while the guys work. Just speculation, I really don’t know and my premise might be wrong too, just something I was thinking about.
