This study from The Lancet explores how simple physical characteristics—Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist-to-Chest Ratio (WCR), and Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR)—influence perceptions of attractiveness in both men and women.

1. Female Attractiveness:

  • BMI is the strongest predictor, explaining over 74% of the variance in attractiveness ratings.
  • WCR and WHR are insignificant in influencing female attractiveness.
  • Both male and female raters consistently preferred a BMI around 22–23, commonly associated with health and fertility.
  • Evolutionary psychology suggests that this preference aligns with biological cues of reproductive potential.

2. Male Attractiveness:

To explore if similar factors apply to male attractiveness, the study replicated the female attractiveness experiment but used male body images and female raters.

  • Participants:
    • 30 female undergraduates (average age 20.6, SD 1.4) rated color images of 50 men in front view.
    • Heads were obscured to focus solely on body proportions.
  • Measurements Taken:
    • Waist-to-Chest Ratio (WCR) — a measure of upper body shape.
    • Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) — a measure of lower body shape.
    • Body Mass Index (BMI) — overall body size.
  • Image Selection:
    • Initial measurements were taken from a pool of 214 young men to determine the average ranges.
    • From this pool, 50 images were selected representing a spread of ±1.7 SD from the mean for BMI, WCR, and WHR.
    • Images were shown in a random order, and participants familiarized themselves with the full set before rating.
  • Key Results:
    • WCR emerged as the strongest predictor of male attractiveness, explaining 56% of the variance.
    • BMI added 12.7% to the explanatory power.
  • Findings Illustrated:
    • Even small changes in WCR significantly impacted attractiveness ratings.
    • Lower WCR values (broad chest, narrow waist) correlated with higher attractiveness, emphasizing the appeal of an “inverted triangle” body shape.
    • This body shape aligns with evolutionary cues of physical strength, fitness, and dominance.

3. Evolutionary Implications:

  • For Female Attractiveness:
    • Men focus on size (BMI) as an indicator of health and reproductive potential.
  • For Male Attractiveness:
    • Women prioritize shape (WCR) over size, with the “inverted triangle” physique signaling strength and protection capabilities.

4. Conclusions:

  • Attractiveness cues differ by gender:
    • Female bodies are judged mainly by BMI (size).
    • Male bodies are judged mainly by WCR (shape).
  • The study supports the idea that simple physical metrics heavily influence perceptions of attractiveness and align with evolutionary-based preferences.
So, I have to emphasize on Chest and shoulders, as well as upper back. Got it.

Exactly the exersizes I hate the most because I train my upper body just enough and focus more on strong legs and strong lower back and abdomen.

What about injecting roids, growth hormones and peptides?

So an inkwell can be strongER than normies
