I'm sure all of us are familiar with albums like Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you Were Here, and the Wall, but between the band's debut album with Syd and the release of Dark Side, the band released five albums. They are as follows:

-A Saucerful of Secrets (1968); very experimental, very psychedelic. One Syd song at the end, but largely instrumental and Hawkwind-tier.
-More (1969); a movie soundtrack for a european film about a heroin addicted couple. Only two good songs, heaviest stuff Floyd ever did.
-Atom Heart Mother (1970); one of the poorest received Floyd albums, very progressive but also very experimental. Features a huge 23 minute instrumental track.
-Meddle (1971); includes the legendary epic "Echoes", generally a well liked album with lots of prog.
-Obscured by Clouds (1972); another movie soundtrack, this time about people who go into the jungle to find lost tribes. Country rock influenced and more accessible, it's negatively received but i find it underrated.

I generally like the early Floyd sound post-Syd; it's very underrated and progressive. Would like to hear what you guys think

I like Atom heart and meddle but I don findthem understand. I feel like around that Time the banda didn't have a "personality" (unlike Syds era and safter with DSOTM) they WEre just rambling and testing the Waters until they found their sound with darkside

i really liked jugaband blues and see emily play by syds pink floyd, but i do think waters pink floyd is way better

I mean they interviewed the band and they said DSOTM was an out of nowhere success. I personally love the band's music from that period - with the magnum opus being the "live" performance in a deserted Pompeii amphitheater. If you've never listened to the version of Echoes from that film, you must. I consider it to be a top 5 song of 70's prog, up there with Yes's Close to the Edge, the 1973 live rendition of King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man, Rush's La Villa Strangiato, and everything off VDGG's Godbluff album

I find it interesting how many people latch onto Syd's music. I remember Jugband being my song at the end of HS as I was graduating; all the kids treated me like shit and I was isolated; I never attended prom or graduation, and I kind of related to what Syd was saying in that song in a really fucked up

"i'll do my loving in the winter..." to refer to the Summer of Love and his isolation

I get what you're coming from but even if they didn't expect that success their sound was definetly different than the previous batch of albums you listed that kinda less structured . Not really into yes or génesis but I do like some King Crimson as hell as Syds stuff

After Waters left I feel like they just lost direction and were in a similar place like the bunch of albums you listed.

Darkside of the moon and Animals are my favorite, I feel like wish you were here Is good but kinda overrated. The wall Is better but I just can't listen to it because it gets me down

Yep, you hit the nail with this post. "Close to the Edge" and ANY rendition of Schizoid Man from 1973-4 is the apex of music from that period. also, regarding PF, "The Nile Song" is one of their best of that period absolutely. You must be a fan of the great Bill Bruford. I've met both him, Steve Howe, and Robert Fripp, back in the 90s. Interesting people, all of them. Wow, never thought I would ever say, "back in the 90s".....wow

I used to own EVERYTHING KC and Yes (except Tormato and anything after 90125).... until a drug addiction forced me to abandon ALL of it (several thousand $ worth of music tossed in the dumpster by someone other than me) and become completely and utterly homeless (and hence even MORE incel). Now I just lay in bed with my head under the pillow like an ostrich. Don't even want the music back, unfortunately.

Animals is their best album.

You forgot Ummagumma. I have it on the original 1969 vinyl and I think it sounds alright.

I wonder why normies enjoy the dark side of the moon so much?? I just don't get it
