John Mitchel - Wikipedia
This is an interesting man, John Mitchell is a hero within Irish nationalism. He was a Protestant from a Scottish background although still Irish nationalist rather than unionist.
He was exiled to Australia and then escaped to New York. In USA he was very pro-slavery. Many people think it was hypocritical of him to be racist given his Irish nationalist heritage.
He said
it was not a crime "or even a peccadillo to hold slaves, to buy slaves, to keep slaves to their work by flogging or other needful correction", and that he himself, might wish for "a good plantation well-stocked with healthy negroes in Alabama".
He said that blacks were "an innately inferior people"
He also said that "nearly all the great men which Europe produced have been Celts".
There is a county in Iowa named after him.
Also there is a statue of him in an Irish town and there was a petition for it to be taken down during the Black Lives Matter saga.
There are also numerous Gaelic sports clubs named after him.
