I know this because I live near some former members who did prison sentences. One of these men got a young woman pregnant, then went to prison and missed out on her growing up however he is a bachelor now. Another example is a man who has a wife and children, however him and his wife are alcoholics now. That example is not the same, many people in the Irish republic do actually view northerners as Irish, I would roughly say that 70% of them do. Other reasons why this is a bad example is that we actually have Irish citizenship in Northern Ireland, we can have Irish passports straight from birth whereas other people in the world need to have an Irish parent of grandparent to get one, another reason is that we used to be in the same country as the republic before 1921, USA and Canada were never a united country (American Indian tribal borders don't count) My own grandfather was born in a unified Ireland pre 1921.
