This is 99% of religious people for all of history. In Ancient Rome, people didn’t even really believe in the Roman gods. They viewed the gods in the same way we see Santa or the Tooth Fairy. They worshipped Mars and shit because it was cultural and it’s what you did. Nobody actually believed Mars was sitting on a mountain or some shit and would come help them fight battles. It was a good-luck ritual like wearing your special socks before a football game.
We can’t comprehend this because modern religion is supposed to be 100% unironic, genuine faith. Modern religions put a huge emphasis on both genuine devotion and reproduction, which continues the cycle of religion. The truth is, throughout history, your religion had basically no impact on your day-to-day life, and people saw them more like Marvel superheros you wrote fanfiction about.
Now, were there genuine religions with genuine believers throughout history? Yes, but they’re fewer and more far between than you think. For every Ancient Mayan eating a sautéed heart, there was a 100 people who just made up gods to explain what they couldn’t explain and moved on.

To add onto this, where Christianity and Islam separate themselves from other religions (including Judaism) is the concept of “genuine faith.” You must believe with your heart it all to be true. Genuine belief is a requirement.
In Ancient Greece/Rome, it did not matter what you think. Zeus/Jupiter did not give a single fuck what you or any other mortal thought of them. They just cared that you performed the ritual. So even among the (likely small minority) of people in Ancient Rome/Greece that 100% believe the gods were real, sitting on Mt. Olympus, the gods gave zero fucks about their personal “devotion.” In fact, you could be an atheist, and as long as you did your burnt offerings or whatever, Zeus didn’t fucking care. In the same vein, the devoutly religious didn’t care about winning hearts or minds, just maintaining the status quo (aka rituals/traditions). If you were an atheist, but you did your rituals, you were a pious man in the eyes of society.
Judaism is actually somewhat interesting in this respect, because, at least in the Torah, God seems less concerned about the genuine faith of His followers, and more concerned with whether they’re following the rules.
