As I worked out in the gym I imagined myself beating someone up who wronged me in the past. But for real: I would say that in the case of social collapse the muscles someone needs mostly are leg muscles.
Most extremely buff guys have 1) a high need for energy, 2) very low durability (just watch someone with big muscles run up -especially in altitudes where there is the problem with hypobaric hypoxia-, an extremely lanky man can easily outperform him), 3) physical fights (like beatings) rarely happen even in the case of armored conflict, 4) lifting strengthens/improves white muscles with a high amount of power, but with a low amount of durability (red muscles -which are improved via long-term exercise- are far more durable, they have good oxygen saving capacities due to higher amounts of myoglobin, reps are more important than pure strength for being able to constantly perform, but red muscles are nonetheless important to beat the shit out of someone if necessary).
If anyone is genuinely interested in surviving a social collapse rather a) make a bunker, b) stock up food, c) get a hunting license/fishing license to practice survival skills/food acquisition, d) learn about your local flora/fauna (good food sources, how to make food eatable without fearing certain parasites). In the case of a nuclear collapse you can also stock up medication, but the question is whether anyone would even want to survive a hopeless scenario with absolutely no life quality.
