Today in lecture, my professor was talking about intersexual selection and was using orangutans as an example. He explained how female orangutans only breed when they are ovulating, and when they breed, it takes around 6 years for them to ovulate again (because they are taking care of current offspring). Professor explained how male orangutans have to keep visiting female orangutan territory in hope to find an ovulating female and fulfill every organisms goal, create an offspring. Its already hard to catch the ovulation window for the male orangutans, but on top of that, the female wont mate with them if they dont find them attractive.
Flanges are these large cheek pads that male orangutans have. The bigger they are the more attractive the female will find them, therefore, they’ll get a chance to reproduce.
Heres the catch, some male orangutans never develop flanges. So then what happens to the undeveloped males? asked the professor. Some foid thinking she was funny said “they turn into incels” and the entire room laughed. They are all so cruel.
