But if that's the case we should be banding together and making some kind of fortified holdout rather than rotting on here. Having a gun is mainly an advantage either when the other person doesn't have one, or defending a fortified area.

This is important. If you're American and own a gun, while it's useful, you're likely not at an advantage relative to others, but if you live in a country with strict weapon control (like the UK) and have a gun or well-made bow, you could have an advantage.
I have an idea for how I would survive it. You need an underground area, hidden or with reinforced, locked doors, packed with weapons, long-lasting foods, water, water filtration systems and purification tablets, supplements, masks, chemsuits, and other items. The idea would be to wait out the initial phase. Not having a refuge in the immediate collapse would be a death sentence because people would be resorting to hunting, robbery, and cannibalism.
The most essential thing is for all of this to be done in advance. You don't want to be making preparations when everyone else is rushing to raid the shelves. Look at COVID. It was trivial, yet it highlighted this.

It would potentially be nice if you were well-prepared, and it would be hell if you were not. Most people will get fucked by making no preparations until nearly everyone is making them all at once at the last second. Those will be the people to die in excess.
I do think there will be a catastrophe in this century. Maybe society won't collapse, but if 'only' a billion or two billion or three billion people die, that still necessitates serious preparations if you don't want to end up in a mass grave.
