Finding a woman that is single is like finding parking space downtown at noon; The good spots will definitely be taken, but so will the other parking spots because there are more cars out there than there are parking lots to accommodate them.
Men have a much lower threshold than woman as to what is physically attractive to them. Not only that, but men have a diverse range of preferences in a woman; Some men like short women, tall women, skinny women, fat women, hourglass-shaped women, and women of all different races and ethnicities. Men also don't care way too much about personality, and are willing to date a woman with a poor personality if she is sexually attractive enough to him.
Therefore, if you have a crush on a girl or find her to be cute, it's very likely that at least several dozen other guys have thought the same. If you are pursuing a girl, it's very likely that at least five other guys are also pursuing the same girl. So out of all these other guys, if you want to get into a relationship with her, you have to either be the tallest, best-looking of her pick with the best personality and career prospects, or provide her with something that the other four men cannot provide.
What makes things more difficult is that until at least age 23, there are actually more women than there are men.
Here is some census data for Toronto, see Figure 2.3:

If you look at the numbers, you will find on average that until age 23, there are at least 2,000 more men than there are women. Even if every man and woman were paired, not every guy is guaranteed a relationship. Also, this explains why for a lot of men, it's excruciatingly difficult to get sex or a relationship during college, and why there are more male virgins than there are female virgins.
The point is that just being average is not going to cut it. You have to be above average in appearance, in personality, in height, and in social status, ESPECIALLY if you're a young man. If not, you have to fulfill some sort of niche that other men don't fulfill (if you can supply drugs or whatnot, or if you're a professional sports player, you can appeal to different women through social status).
If not, then likely you'll end up like the average man, being alone and sexless until you're 30, then the scales tip once there are 4,000 more women than men on average (though the scales won't tip by much and you still have to be financially stable). But remember that any woman you marry at that age has had more experience with better looking partners than you, and that you will have missed out on a very important character and personality building activity by not having had any romantic relationships in your youth.
