Think of Spider Man. He is a superhero who saves a lot of people and does great things, but in his everyday life he is just a normal person with a job and no one knows about his deeds. On top of that he is a pushover. No one knows about what he does, BUT he knows, so he has that good feeling about himself. He knows he is special and not like everyone else.
What we are dealing here with is not on the same scale, not even close, but the principle is the same.
