Elon Musk was ridiculed and attacked by a starlet on Instagram because she found out his old pics where he was balding and weak-looking, and deduced he had had hair plugs and took steroids.

In this world, the contempt that "old money" had for "nouveau riches" has completely disappeared. However the last remnant of feudal thinking, "natural beauty" vs "artificial beauty", still stands very strong.

People will hate your guts if they think you have tried to escape your inborn ugliness, and it's more than about jealousy. In all my life I've never seen any positive comment on cosmetic surgery in the media. Humans hate "fakers" in general even though going through PS takes more effort and courage than merely being born.

I'd get flamed by basically everyone I know, since my relations with people are usually very long-term and they remember how I look. I'm not really sure how much my mug can even be improved.

Well, generally I think women are catty about it and are prone to jealousy so you see a lot of insults flying around when it comes to female celebrities getting plastic surgery. But in terms of those celebrities' ability to stay relevant and continue getting work, it has no negative effect. As in, Kylie Jenner remains extremely popular after tons of plastic surgery. Whereas if someone like George Clooney gets plastic surgery, even if it makes him more attractive, his SMV drops if anyone finds out. I think the main difference is that regardless of what is said in the media about plastic surgery for females, unless it's a ridiculously botched job, their SMV stays constant or even rises. I think a part of it comes from the supposed effortlessness of attractive males. Women are encouraged to wear fake-up, utilize certain angles in selfies to make themselves look thinner, and other stuff of that nature. Chad is expected to be a Chad when he rolls out of bed in the morning. There's much less hiding your flaws as a male. For example, a fat woman can wear certain clothes and put on certain make-up patterns that create the appearance of lower weight, as their BF% is less important to facial aesthetics. For men, you can hide your belly in a baggy shirt but that high BF% has an extremely negative impact on face and SMV and is impossible to hide successfully. If you read the women's magazines online, they're full of picture galleries of "make-up free celeb selfies." Usually it involves a female celebrity who's SMV drops by 2-3 points without make-up receiving praise for looking as good or better. It's all smoke and mirrors and female delusion. There's a reason why foids overvalue their appearances and a large part of it is the fact that they're not given honest feedback by other women. To come back around to the point, female SMV is much more fluid, and can easily change 2 points or more with angles, lighting, make-up etc depending on the celebrity. We're used to seeing a woman like Scarlett Johannson playing an "ugly" 6/10 in one movie and then a "sexy" 8/10 in her next movie. And this is all done based on marketing and make-up and tricks of the eye. So if a woman gets plastic surgery to artificially raise her SMV, it already exists on a continuum, and we are accustomed to seeing it as just another minor change in her appearance and attractiveness. But if you look at Tom Cruise, for example, he's never played the "ugly guy" in a role, because his SMV (besides the natural drop with age) is essentially constant regardless of the clothes he wears, the haircut he has, the character he plays. So if he was to suddenly change significantly in appearance, it would shock people in a way that another botox treatment for Monica Bellucci wouldn't.
