In this day and age, nothing brings status quite like the victim status (media/society given label, not objective label).
With that in mind, lets look at how the progressive media functions. They go on 24/7 about how men oppress women. If that were the case, why is the media being supportive of them? If they were truly oppressed, the media and society would vilify them 24/7, because that is how oppression works. The groups who are truly oppressed are the ones who you DON'T hear about, at least in a positive light. Take short men for instance, it is socially acceptable to bully them, discriminate against them, and dismiss them because of their height. The media does not go anal about how this is bad, they actually encourage it. Talking about how this is bad would actually get you more hated on, Napoleon complex.
A woman can talk about how she hates men and she is "a strong feminist." But if a man says he prefers women who are not landwhales, then its fucking Armageddon.
If a group has enough social power to get away with hating their "oppressors" with no punishment, and its not the same the other way around...then that means they have more social power than their so-called oppressors.
Take slavery, for example. The slave master can degrade and belittle his slaves all he wants...because he has more power. But if a slave back-talks or something, he would be punished like hell. It doesn't take a fucking genius to see who the oppressor is.
This applies to other groups besides women as well, obviously.
EDIT: Just to make my first statement more clear:
The closest exceptions are objective physical disadvantages, which is basically just being poor or having certain handicaps. But even then, having a medical term for your handcap will bring you so much more status than not having it recognized by medical community/not being obvious.
