Its more than looks. In the 1950s not a lot of women worked. They essentially NEEDED a beta provider to survive. Look at the average age of marriage then vs now:

Sure you probably had women that slept around but you still had shaming tactics unlike today. Society was different. Nowadays nobody cares if your 30 and not married. Nobody cares if you have a bastard kid anymore. I remember my aunt was pregnant when she got married in the late 1980s everyone was whispering about her getting knocked up before marriage.
