I'm not sure about that.
In France at least I have noticed how commonly ugly men and women were in the 70s and 80s after watching one of those nostalgia TV programs they made about that era.
It dawned upon me that I mostly look like people from that era while modern men look 'pretty' and nearly always have thick lush hair. TV-presentators, News-readers, singers, actors, etc... A great bunch of them were plain or ugly in 1985.
