There are a few people that are not very well known but that are remarkable and worthy of remembering. I try to keep a mental note about them.

One of them is Suleiman al-Halabi. He killed the French general Kleber in 1800, but that's not why I think he's a remarkable person (not that I think killing that general was bad or anything, he was at least in his mind defending his country against a foreign invader, which is perfectly respectable).

What is remarkable is that he was sentenced to a very gruesome execution, and yet he withstood it with tremendous courage and dignity.

It is very inspirational as it shows that a man, with enough strength of character, really can endure the worst things.

I don't want to fall into a not as bas as fallacy, but still, it does put things in perspective.

tbh thought this was about Qasem Soleimani at first.
 
Bumping this thread up for no other particular reason than I found myself thinking about Soleyman today. May we all be able to gather even a tiny fraction of his courage in the coming years.
