I've read his manifesto for the second time recently, and noticed new things.
It's a great read btw, if any incels didn't read it, you should.
I realized that part of Elliot's struggle was that he felt bad about a lack of accomplishment. He had more problems, including being soul crushingly lonely and no one being truly there for him ever (you can see that he doesn't trust anyone or confide in anyone), but this was part of it too, and he felt very bad about himself for it. I noticed this on the second read because he superficially comes across as narcissistic or proud of himself, but it's a cope.
In fact, he specifically said that he will "prove his true worth" on the day of retribution. He expected to do something big, and his self esteem was very dependant on this, because university was going wrong, skateboarding was going wrong, getting a girlfriend or friends was going wrong obviously, and even in WoW he said he wasn't even good at it. He felt he was destined for great things but didn't have anything to show for it, but he was going to make everything right in the Day of Retribution, and "show the world his true worth" (imagine how shit he must've been feeling at this point, he was looking forward for his life to end). We can't hear from him after that, but we know that went wrong, and what happened was not what he had in mind.
Not only that, but, a little earlier, he talked about how horrible it would be if, due to the cops being onto him, he had to do a rushed version of his original plans, and that he can't think of a more horrible way for things to end. This is what ended up happening. No sorority house shooting, no killing Jazz, no running into any groups with the Mercedes SUV, just a minor shootup if you think about it, Elliot Rodger most likely died feeling like utter shit
