I don't think there were incels back then.

Back then, boys would be trained by the adult males in the tribe - by their father and uncles - in every skill needed to contribute to the tribe. There were basically no "useless" males in adulthood. Also, there was an excess of females because some of the males would die while learning to hunt or fight or whatever.

I don't think males (even tribal leaders) have harems of women back then, because it took all the labor of a man to support his own family.

So the way it would work is, there'd be a danger that you would die as a young boy, but if you reached puberty, you would be sufficiently attractive to get a mate, and there would be extra females so you wouldn't be getting the bottom of the barrel.

The sex ratio would even out after this because some of the females would die while giving birth. If your mate died, then you would take one of the "excess" females.
