I lean more towards the spiritual side. Flesh, blood, and bones all smell, feel, and look the same and we know exactly what they're made up of. But beneath the neurons, the microtubules in our brains, is something called consciousness that we all have access to.

The body may go away but consciousness doesn't go away. You can't kill consciousness. It's something that's always been there. Living sentient things merely have access to it.
