Imo, Rare ware was never that good at making 3d platformers. Donkey Kong Country Trilogy were much better than Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64.

Mindlessly collecting things in a bloated sandbox in-between jank mini games is not fun.

I played it a few years ago. It's a very mediocre 3D platformer/collectathon. I wouldn't recommend it even if you like those kinds of games. It's so short and it doesn't do anything fresh or innovative with the genre. At its core, Yooka-Laylee is a pale imitation of Banjo-Kazooie. You're better off playing that or any other '90s collectathon.

Well, the devs are likely washed up after years of inexpensive. Talent does fade with age. Technical limitations bred creativity and more compact map design as well. It's not that surprising they'd create overly bloated maps.
