I was thinking of getting a fake wallet

I've got a depleted gift card, and I've always been worried about handing over my wallet to some random mugger. So I got an idea: what if I get a fake wallet, just some cheap, piece-of-shit wallet from amazon, put my fake gift card in there, some cash (a reasonable amount to afford to lose, but enough to convince my potential future mugger that it's my real wallet), and maybe an old, expired driver's license of mine, assuming I can find it (I'm not entirely sure where it is, at the moment).

Is this a good idea? Or am I just a tad bit too paranoid?

depends if it's worth doing. I never think about getting mugged, I live in a relatively safe area. Unless you live in a dangerous city like London where muggings occur regularly, then yes, do it.
