I agree that oftentimes it's just desperation.

Especially if they're going for someone who is 14 or 15 because why risk everything over 1-2 years? It mostly makes sense that they were desperate.

Also I dislike how they refer to any sex with a minor as "rape". I kind of get the logic but it's misleading and lessens the impact of a word that should be reserved for basically sexual violence, and really just intercourse.

It's a bit like how if someone downloads cp it counts as "making" it because you've made a copy of it on your hard disk.

I can't help but wonder if these terms are intentionally misleading to try to make the person look even worse than they are.

They seem to do it all the time. Like when they put Mr Double in jail for 40 years because of fictional stories about kids, an article said they "detailed the sexual abuse of children" which seems worded both to sound more extreme (they could have just said sex) and also misleading ("detailing" is typically reserved for accounts of events that actually happened).
