I think after kurt cobain died and nirvana ended, the single handedly only ACTUAL rock band (indie shit and pop rock obv dont count, so GTFOH) to brake the top of the charts for the last 30 something yrs, dude willingness to be an actual artist just... vanished.
Dont get me wrong, he still wanted to be rich, famous, influential AND a rock star, but the drive to move culture on a whim like before wasnt there AT ALL...
So, what did he do? You already know. Pump out easily digestible, ready made garbage for the masses, ofc.
If you listened already to marigold, the only song he made from the time of nirvana, you know that dude can pump out good shit (if he wants to).
Even if you dont like it, you have to admit its better than any foo fighters garbage made subsequently, even in an artistical, soulful, thoughtful level.
