I spent $2k on a brand new Thinkpad X1 Carbon and it's running slow

I have anki, microsoft word, windows media player, and a couple of internet edge browser tabs and somehow it's consuming >10GB ram. What the fuck gay shit is this?

Fucking chinese ripped me off. It wouldn't happen if IBM still made thinkpads.

What do you need Windows media player for that is Microsoft garbage, use mpchc be. Also check your task manager for applications that consume a large amount of ram.

Thinkpads are never fast
IBM makes some pretty disappointing products given the price range

>buys laptop
>expects it to run fast

many such cases

Use task manager faggot
also install windows ltsb and netlimiter

why did you spend 2000 dollars on a laptop with integrated graphics? wtf?

also if it's only consooming 10 gb of ram it means there are 6 more left unused, why would it be slow?

Anyway,
My laptop has just 4GB of RAM and I have 6 tabs open, including an HD video. It's only consooming around 2 GB of RAM. I could easily open a video on windows media player + word right now and still not max out the RAM. I'm assuming the video you're watching is at a ridiculously high resolution (like 4K). Otherwise I see no reason for this to happen

oh and stop using windows media player - it's shit
install this instead

How much RAM does it have?
Windows will always assign a percentage of RAM based on how much is available.
There's a lot of things you can do to optimize Windows.
The only thing that would be a real issue is if the heatsink isn't big enough or the fans are set too low (the latter can be changed).
Give me an example of how it's slow?

My laptop has just 4GB of RAM and I have 6 tabs open, including an HD video. It's only consooming around 2 GB of RAM.
Like I said, Windows will reserve a percentage of RAM if it's available. Windows will run faster when it doesn't have to constantly seek the storage medium.

There's a way to lower this, @IncelGolem , but I can't remember off the top of my head. If you don't need the RAM for something else, leave it as is.

Check for malware. Maybe disable internet browser's accessibility settings(for fire fix at the least it reduces memory use). Also disable notifications by windows. There is a YT video explaining opimtixation for Windows 10, do all the shit in it, and leave some of the features on that you might use for real(system restore to counter malware and other stuff).

Also if you want a deep inspection consider using memtest86

Mine works fast with no problems. Proper setup and maintenance is key.

jfl check out my trusty ol laptop. only reason it has lasted so long is because I never use it as a laptop, only ever plugged in my monitor and keyboard.

all I do is watch movies and videos and ldar on here.

my PC has an i5 4690k and 970 which was the shiz back then but all I use it for now is to torrent in the corner of my room on 24/7

i cbf to upgrade seems like hassle, i might buy a new laptop once I can go travel to asia but im embracing minimalism and not buying new shit even if I can.

bro IBM hasn't owned Thinkpad for like 15 years now, it's made by Lenovo

Consume Product

It's not too late for you to return the computer, you still have time

Buy another Lenovo like the Legion 5, a very clean-looking Gaming Laptop if you need a GPU, and make sure to get the new AMD mobile chips, very powerful while not running too hot, or the new Asus Zenbook if you want something lighter.

If you still don't trust Lenovo, get one from MSI like the GP Leopard for his studies: my father uses last year's model and so far has had no complaints.

Check this guy's reviews before you make a judgment; very informative and hands-on.

Expensive laptops are a waste. I bought a 2k euro laptop 3 years ago and I regret it. I now use a 270 euro Chromebook and it's literally my favourite laptop so far.

Look at the product before you decide to spend so much money.
You shouldn't go for the cheapest option either: I got burned once by the cheap Acer Laptop that overheated easily and broke when its cheap metal hinge snapped.

Just look for the midrange options with solid build quality and upgradable memory and storage for future-proofing.

Yeah, I guess. Although this laptop has 8gb of ram and 128gb of storage, is foldable, has a touchscreen and was 270 because of the amazon back 2 school sale. Most windows laptops I had in the past only last for 3 hours max, gaming laptops never lasted for more than an hour. The laptop I got now lasts like 11 hours when I am just watching anime. It is a Lenovo laptop btw.
Chrome laptops are a good choice if you ignore their limited functionality because some programs can't run natively on ChromeOS.

If you don't use your laptop much more than for chrome, email, and google docs, you should definitely buy a cheap Chromebook.
