Defend for what is factual.

Learn some of the fallacies, logic and errors in arguments, e.g. strawmans, ad hominems, red herrings, ..., etc

Emulate like those ring-wing debaters, like the others have mentioned above.

Don't be irrational and clinging onto little things like me. Also don't be a hippie like me.

Then you're good to go.

Never say anything that you can't support with evidence. Anecdotal evidence is always weak evidence - scientific studies or historical accounts are better, depending on the context. Don't argue emotion vs. logic because they are not the same thing. Don't use hyperbole or sarcasm unless you want to be a shitter. Your argument is only as strong as your weakest point - quality over quantity.

Address one point at a time in an organized fashion.

Practice your oratory skills. Expand your lexicon through literature.
