There was a really fascinating transition that took place in the late '90s, where suddenly everyone was into computers and everyone was gaming. And suddenly girls called themselves "nerds" and it was such a "fuck you" to people who had been called nerds and had been bullied and ostracized their whole life.
One day you come to school and there's a girl wearing (fake) glasses talking about, "I'm such a nerd omg!" and your first thought is, "whoa maybe I'll have something in common with her" - lol no. Nobody ever bullied her, and she never wanted to hang out with the true social outcasts.
"nerd" was just a costume she put on. And if you pointed this out - not even being mean but just like, "you don't actually know anything nerdy and you've never been bullied" there would be legions of white knights (including actual nerds) attacking you.
Not everything was good ofc, but some things we're definitely better back in the 90s-early 2000s. It feels like hell on earth these days
