I already have one somewhere buried away at a different house in a box, lol

But this one was cheap on eBay and is a Sony so now I'll have two :D

I also want to buy a new tape Walkman because my old one which is a Sanyo doesn't have rewind only fast forward. XD

MDs are kinda based tech. Upgrade from the cd, still having a lot of soul and appeal of older spinning tech.

Nice, I liked the format even if it’s kind of niche and useless because CD, SACD, and flash storage. I get the idea of creating a smaller disk media back in the day for portable use but flash prices coming down so fast just sucker punched it. The codecs it used were not that good either and proprietary (ATRAC), modern codecs blow it out or flac for lossless compression.

Yeah exactly!

Small, tactile, nice to use, etc.

I do like streaming music on my phone but sometimes it's nice to have variety and some retro tech ^_^

You actually gave me an idea, im going to look for one. What I do remember is that the windows software was crap and really buggy. It would copy and convert in one go and you were always glad if the songs all succeeded lol

I think other than novelty and nostalgia... there is SOME benefit.

Which is that... sometimes I like to strip away all the weirdness of modern tech. No internet connection needed, no logins, no updates... and it means I'm not just reliant on one single device.

I get that I could get an MP3 player but... idk. That also tends to introduce complexity. Now you're fiddling around with MP3s and transferring them and stuff. It's nice to get away from all that sometimes.

It had software? lol

I used to use a hi-fi thing to convert CD albums to minidisc.

Yeah I think it was called SonicStage what I used. Nice interface for the time, but incredibly buggy. There are modern alternatives.

It was intended for putting mp3s or oggs to MD

Ah wow OK. Yeah I think I only ever copied across albums. Then I threw a bunch in my backpack before I left in the morning depending on what I wanted to listen to. In cases ofc :D

Idk, Sony niggers were obsessed with making obscure disc formats. Should have kept it dvd and cd then mini cd and dvd. UMD and mini disc were a side step. And that’s not even getting into dvd+ and dvd- and cdr+ and cdr -, rw and the odd shape mini cd business cards.

Hm. I mean, the weird shapes didn't really matter because it was only the part without data on it that was shaped. The laser and player didn't especially care what the shape of that portion was.

UMD and minidisc I think are great because of the cases. It protects and disc and makes it much easier to use on the go. And quicker to put in the player!

But like... think of the simplicity of a tape walkman for example! You walk along and then pop into a shop and then oh look there is Definitely Maybe by Oasis on tape I'll buy that and then you put it in and it plays and that's it. lol

So simple ^_^
