"Bullying is a manifestation of our primate pack-animal instincts. In the wild, high status primates take out their rage and aggression on lower status primates.
In the "human" world, high status "people" take out their rage and aggression on low status "people". This is instinctive, unquestioned most of the time.
The low status individual carries the psychic burden of the whole group - and that is their role. They are expected to play it.
When they do not, it is doubly shocking - because it's like a subtle betrayal of our ingrained nature - what people secretly believe is "right" so long as they aren't the low status ones.
