Also this isn't a gotcha take, You cannot make a genuinely accurate depiction of severe mental illness and also make something mass audiences will watch for four seasons. The aestheticization isn't a stylistic choice you can critique in isolation it's the product. The suffering has to be cinematic because unwatchable suffering doesn't get renewed.
I was hooked from the very start, S2 was a bit slow. But the later seasons were all peak.

The show's actual thesis is that self-narrative is the disorder. Elliot isn't depicting mental illness, he's depicting the story a mentally ill person tells themselves about their mental illness
Idk what you're in about here, but all this emo boy persona was constructed by him because he was sexually abused as a child, he didn't choose it to be this way. That's the whole fucking deal, 90% of the patients with DID have experienced some sort of abuse in childhood.
The Elliot we see is not the real Elliot, that's the whole fucking plot twist was about. The real Elliot is someone so annihilated by trauma that he built an entire surrogate self to live his life for him and then vacated.
The guy you're complaining about he's a constructed identity the original Elliot's psyche built specifically to interface with the world.He's literally a coping mechanism. The show retroactively makes its entire emotional architecture a trap.
