I’m very close to my mom, and she loves me deeply because I’m her only child. But it hurts so much knowing that she doesn’t get to experience the things other mothers her age do. Things like seeing her son bring his girlfriend home, or maybe one day becoming a grandmother. Knowing that her son has a fulfilling social and romantic life instead of being a loser.
I can’t give my mother any of that.
She keeps asking me when I’m finally going to bring a girl home because she wants to meet my girlfriend. The other day, one of her friends told her over the phone that her son had brought his girlfriend home for Christmas. I looked at my mom’s face, and she had this sad expression, almost as if she was thinking, “I wish I could experience that too.”
For now, I’m trying to lie by saying that I have a girlfriend but that I don’t want to introduce her to my family. I’m trying to hide the fact that I’m a loser, but I know that sooner or later she’ll realize that something isn’t right—if she hasn’t already, which I’m pretty sure she has.
