This was always my theory about third world reproduction. The poorer the country, the higher the birthrate, because #1 childhood mortality is high and they have more kids to increase the odds of at least 1 surviving to adulthood and #2 the more kids, the more of them that can work to bring in more income to the family.

This was also how it was in currently developed countries 100-300 years ago when they were less wealthy and conditions were worse (especially childhood mortality was much higher).
