Imo there has to be certainty about how consciousness/sentience is created, and guarantees that robots/AI won't suffer, we also need their consent for stuff if they're agentic/sentient/conscious/etc (I'm not an expert in the field, obviously, just my general caution and suffering avoidance). I would never feel comfortable with a companion if I was unsure of the consent status or level of sentience/consciousness. Even then, I think I'm basically meant to be alone at this point.
