We've seen hyper-aggressive fathers in television all the time, the only way fathers see men in popular culture is through absolute hatred and fathers are depicted as shiny White Knights trying to keep their daughters virgins.

In real life fathers are chill if she likes him, I've seen enough good relationships to know that those overprotective men aren't normal, in fact those are probably mentally ill psychopaths, which says more about people who write films than it says about society.
