I have another idea for a solution.
Totally hypothetical and impossible to implement, but theoretically should work.

Everyone is anonymously rated on looks by the gender they are interested in, then everyone is seperated into little villages of people in their own league. No one has access to anyone who is significantly hotter than them. Problem solved right?

Nah it would still work, because even if they rate 90% of guys as 1/10, you would just order all the guys from least rated to highest rated, and then base their actual rating on where they are in the order. So regardless of how harsh people are with their judgements, each gender will have a smooth, linear, and fairly accurate continuum of hotness.
