I've only shot a rifle once and it was a .223 AR in Tennessee, also I wasn't in a moving car.

Are you American ? If you aren't then the chance of going to a range and shooting ACTUAL good guns is quite low.
Luckily Dixie states are based and even as a tourist I could shoot freely, not even an instructor followed me to the range. ( I went to a small town so maybe that's why )
