You don't just walk up and say you want to join someone's gang. It doesn't work that way. Most gang members in the US grew up around that neighborhood that they're affiliated with, either that or they have connections from somewhere else and have benefits they can bring to the table so they can "put in work" so to speak
The best thing you can do is commit a crime, go to prison, and join a gang in there, which is usually based on your race. And when you get back out, if you were lucky enough to join an influential gang you could continue that sort of activity- putting in work- on the streets.

If you just want to larp, well that's not true thugmaxxing in my book, just larpmaxxing, but you can pretend to be part of a gang, get face tats and dress like the gang you want to emulate, act tough and carry a gun and knife around wherever you go.
Well yeah you can commit crimes by yourself and you can be tough as an individual but without backup or connections it won't end well for you
You have to be born with it or grow up in an extremely brutal environment.
