Their reactions often mirror those of people with severe autism or just heavily disabled.

Sentient in the sense that they're animals capable of feeling. As for sapience? I believe they have a ways to go. Even koko, the gorilla which supposedly learned sign language, remained a contentious topic due to disagreements over how well she actually understood the meaning of what she was supposedly saying. However, they are using tools which shows they might not be as far off as we think.
