but one time i lost my mailbox keys (my subdivision has a community mailbox that we all use) and i raged so hard that i ended up kicking my closet door off its track

When I keep things in my pockets I tend to lose them, especially if you have shallow pockets.

Good thing I always walk around with a bag and put my stuff in.

Or you can just leave most of the stuff at home and bring what's necessary outside.
