During 23-24 June 2023 Wagner mercenaries advanced on Moscow. The closest they got to Moscow was 59 miles. They were able to make a rapid advance due to well constructed roads. Given another day or two they would have reached Moscow.
Prior to the German invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941 the German planners thought a road network existed in Russia. It did not. Roads marked on maps were in a very poor state and often just dirt tracks. This held up the German advance.
Now consider that Germany had an autobahn system and that they had good trade relations with the USSR. Germany imported raw materials and exported machine tools right up the invasion.
So, what if Germany had offered to build autobahns for the Soviets as part of a trade agreement and then invaded using these same road networks? A sort of Trojan horse.
The war could have been over in 4 days.
Had the German War Planners tried to drive to Moscow in a car they would have quickly seen the state of the roads and maybe the idea of building an autobahn straight from Berlin to Moscow would have occurred to them.
